MicroFlake® Pheromone-Based Insect Mating
Disruptants Flakes |
Pheromone dispensing flakes for
application by aerial or ground equipment for the
control of pest insect populations by the
prevention of insect mating. These
products utilize naturally occurring pheromone
"perfumes" produced by female insects to attract
males of the same species for mating. When the
species-specific pheromone is synthesized in large
quantity, formulated in a controlled-release
product, and applied to forest or crop areas to be
protected, its continuous release forms a
confusing "scent cloud" that interferes with the
males' ability to follow natural pheromone scent
trails to females of the species. Since mating is
disrupted, population explosions of harmful insect
pests are prevented and valuable forests and crops
are protected without the broad scale use of toxic
insecticides.

MICRO-FLAKE Light Brown Apple Moth |
Hercon Disrupt Micro-Flake LBAM
is an environmentally compatible insect pheromone
product used in Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
programs as an insect mating disruptant
specifically to suppress populations of the new
invasive pest species, Light Brown Apple Moth
(LBAM), Epiphyas postvittana. The pheromone
contained in the product is a synthetic version of
the naturally occurring pheromone “perfume”
produced by female LBAM moths to create
distinctive scent trails attractive to male LBAM
moths. The purpose of these scent trails is to
function as a “sex attractant” to aid male moths
in locating female moths for mating. Blanketing an
area infested with LBAM with synthetic LBAM
pheromone can mask these naturally produced scent
trails. The pheromone plume produced by the female
moth is then no longer distinct enough for the
male moth to follow to the female, so the
occurrence of successful mating and the size of
subsequent LBAM populations are reduced. This
environmentally friendly method of controlling
pest insect populations is called “mating
disruption.”

| LURETAPE®
Pheromone- and Attractant-Based Insect Lures
|
For use in SCOUT™ Insect Traps
and other insect traps to detect and monitor
insect pests
These products utilize insect
pheromones, food attractants, or other attractants
to lure specific pest insects into insect traps so
their presence can be detected and their
population levels monitored over time. By placing
appropriate traps with lures in areas to be
protected and checking them on a regular basis, a
build up of pest insect populations can be noted
and corrective action taken in time to prevent
major damage to forests, crops, or stored
products. Hercon produces LURETAPE Lures for over
30 different pest insect species (see list).

| SCOUT™
Insect Traps |
For use with LURETAPE® Insect
Lures and other lures to detect and monitor insect
pests
SCOUT traps are available in two main
types; disposable weather-resistant paperboard
traps of various designs that use sticky surfaces
to capture trapped insects, and reusable plastic
traps of several types that use controlled-release
toxicant strips to kill captured insects.
Regardless of type, all require the use of
pheromone or attractant lures in the trap to cause
target insects to enter and become caught.
Specific trap and lure combinations are
recommended for each pest insect species (see
list).

| VAPORTAPE®
Controlled-Release Insecticidal Strips
|
For use in insect traps as a
toxicant to prevent escape of captured
insects
VAPORTAPE Insecticidal Strips
utilize the active ingredient dichlorvos (DDVP) as
a rapid knockdown toxicant to kill target insects
lured into certain types of traps to prevent their
escape and make insect identification and counting
easier. In use, the controlled-release action of
the product allows continuous release of fresh
toxicant over extended periods of time,
eliminating the need for frequent replacement. Two
product types are available, VAPORTAPE BW
Insecticidal Strips for use in boll weevil
monitoring traps and VAPORTAPE GM Insecticidal
Strips for use in gypsy moth monitoring traps and
other types of traps.

| INSECTAPE®
Controlled-Release Insecticidal Strips or Patches
|
For use in telecommunications
and utility equipment to prevent insect
infestation
INSECTAPE Insecticidal
Strips/Patches utilize the active ingredient
propoxur (BAYGON®) as a toxicant/repellent to
prevent insect infestations in telecommunications,
utility, traffic control, and other types of
sensitive equipment susceptible to insect caused
malfunction. The product has two useful effects:
1) when applied inside enclosed spaces such as
equipment boxes or cabinets, it has a repellent
effect on most pest insect species that deters
them from entering; 2) if insects enter anyway,
they pick up enough toxicant to kill them when
they to come in contact with the product as a
result of their search behavior. In use, the
controlled-release action of the product allows
continuous release of fresh toxicant for a full
year or more, depending on actual use conditions,
providing cost-effective insect control to prevent
insect caused malfunctions and equipment servicing
problems.
